Conservatory Comfort

Ventilation

When designing your conservatory, attention should be paid to the type and quantity of ventilation it will contain.

On those hot, stifling summer days you will want to benefit from any available breeze.

If you have not allowed enough ventilation in your conservatory you may find that you cannot use your conservatory as and when you would like to and that would be a shame.

The main types of conservatory ventilation are:
  • Fanlight windows

  • Casement windows

  • Roof vents

  • Integral roof ventilation

  • Frame Trickle vents

With the exception of the last item, it is very difficult to add ventilation to a conservatory once it has been built, so think carefully before you commit to a design.

For most conservatory designs making sure that there are opening windows (fanlights or casements) at either end will suffice, but make sure the window system used has a night vent facility on the opening windows, this allows you to the lock the window in a partially open position, very handy for night-times and when you want to go out during the day and not come back to an oven. If your chosen design has a high roof pitch you should probably be looking at putting a couple of roof vents in, although if not properly installed these can lead to leaks.

Roof vents allow a draught to flow through the conservatory from bottom to top and are a very effective ventilation solution.

Most modern conservatory roofing systems contain Integral roof ventilation through the ridge or wallplate. Some allow the user to adjust the amount of ventilation although we always recommend that this is set to fully open and left there.

Proper ventilation which protects against insect and water ingress is always a good thing in a conservatory.

Frame trickle vents can be added to an existing conservatory in almost every case and can be purchased from any reputable double glazing firm.

The frame (usually at the head) is routed straight through in a thin line, some form of mesh is applied to the outside and a closeable cover is fixed over the inside.

Not too pretty, but if ventilation is needed in an existing conservatory this is a cheap, easy method of acheiving it.
